Affiliation: Geology and Geophysics, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Massachusetts, USA

Fields of interest/specialization: Geology, Oceanography, Geomorphology, Archaeology

Short description: Liviu Giosan is an internationally recognized scientist studying human-climate-landscape interactions and the impact of people on Earth’s environment. He focuses on understanding sources, transport, transformations, as well as the climatic, archaeological and societal significance of sediments in continental and marine environments. Dr. Giosan received his Ph.D. in 2001 from State University of New York at Stony Brook and followed a career from Postdoctoral Researcher to Senior Scientist Emeritus at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). He taught Marine Geology and led seminars in Marine Geodynamics in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/ WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography. Dr. Giosan edited two books on river deltas and interactions between climate, landscapes, and civilizations and authored over 200 scientific studies including in flagship journals such as Nature and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (USA). He organized, participated or supervised land expeditions in Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America as well as research cruises in the Black Sea, the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. His scientific achievements have been highlighted by National Geographic, NY Times, and BBC.
