Educated at Babeș–Bolyai University (BSc in Geography, 1980) followed by MSc in Hydrology at Vrije Universiteit Brussels and holding a Ph.D. in Geography from “Al. I. Cuza” University of Iasi (1991), he advanced through the academic ranks to full professor (2003) and doctoral supervisor (2004–2020) in a new field—Technical Geography and GIS. Between 1990 and 1996 he received several scholarships: the AGU Berkner Scholarship, as well as TEMPUS and COST scholarships in Belgium and France. From 2001 to 2009 he was repeatedly a visiting professor at the Université de Strasbourg; since 2011 he has worked as a professor at the Université de Lorraine, where he is full-time professor since 2020. At the Université de Lorraine, he teaches courses in climatology, hydrology, natural hazards, and climate change. He has served as director or member of numerous national and international projects, including projects on hydro-climatic risks in the Bihor cross-border area (2000–2001), analysis of climate change over the last millennium (2006–2008), the vulnerability of mountain settlements to torrential floods (2007–2011), and the European program FOREST@RISK (2018–2022). He is the founder and editor of the journal Geographia Technica – https://technicalgeography.org (since 2006), now one of the most visible international publications in technical geography in southeastern Europe, indexed in WoS and Scopus. He has published over 160 scientific articles, many in prestigious journals (Environmental Pollution, Journal of Hydrology, Remote Sensing, Earth System Science Data). Notable results include contributions to assessing the vulnerability of water resources in the context of climate change and to the development of spatially explicit databases at the European level. He is a member of prestigious international scientific organizations (AGU, EGU, IAHS, AIC), a reviewer and expert for the National Council for the Attestation of University Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates (CNATDCU), the National Council for Scientific Research (CNCS), and the National Research Authority (ANC), and he was awarded the “Simion Mehedinți” Prize for Geography of the Romanian Academy (1995). Through his activity, Ionel Haidu has helped consolidate technical geography as a frontier discipline between environmental sciences and modern digital tools, achieving international recognition confirmed by extensive academic collaborations and the impact of his work.
